The study considers the concept of ‘place’, in the context of physical characteristics and the associated sensory perception of them. It is approached using a qualitative methodology that embraces sensory ethnography in an experimental manner. It combines aesthetics and ethnography as a process for creating and representing local knowledge of place significance and identity with an aim to provide night into the cause and effect of urban materiality on public perceptions of place. It aims to record and present an analysis of the positive and negative physical characteristics and their effects ‘sense of place’ from our perspective and outsiders.
